Research aims

Our research aims to promote youth mental health through innovative digital support and blended services, in partnership with young people across Ireland, particularly those who are marginalised.

We will engage with young people as well as those who support them in health , youth and community services across the island of Ireland to identify

  • Mental health  challenges facing young people.
  • Appropriate digital mental health tools and interventions to meet young people's needs.
  • Digital mental health interventions that work for  young people.
  • Policy and practice recommendations for health and education providers.

Why engage with our research

More young people in Ireland are facing mental health challenges, and while there are proven ways to help, they're not always being used well. Since 2020, more young people have been seeking mental health support, but the systems in Ireland and Northern Ireland are struggling to keep up.

Recently young people have highlighted that there is a need for a better understanding of how to respond to their mental health needs in new ways, such as using digital technologies.

We want to figure out how to make these digital supports work well for all young people, especially those who are marginalised, and those who may be struggling with their mental health.

Get involved

We are looking for passionate, creative and dedicated people  aged between 16 and 25, Northern Ireland, or between 18 and 25,Republic of Ireland, to participate in our reference groups and workshops.

We welcome applications from people who are enthusiastic about making a difference in the lives of young people, committed to attending meetings, virtually or in person, and actively participating in discussions.

The main goal of the reference group is to allow young people to contribute and shape all aspects of our research project, and to gain new skills. Participants will receive training as well as monetary vouchers to compensate for time spent participating in meetings, workshops, or other activities.

Throughout 2024, we will be running a series of workshops with young people and those that provide services for young people, to gather views that will help us shape our research.

If you have any queries or would like more information on the Reference Group or upcoming workshops, please email Courtney at c.potts@ulster.ac.uk  or Carmen ckealy@universityofgalway.ie.
